CONOR Washington is wanted by both Dagenham & Redbridge and Cambridge United – but will wait to see how his trial with Peterborough United goes before making a decision on his future.

The St Ives Town striker was due to start his three-day trial at London Road today (Wednesday) after visiting Cambridge’s R Costings Abbey Stadium and Dagenham’s Victoria Park at the end of last week.

On the visits, which took place on Thursday and Friday, Washington was accompanied by St Ives’ joint manager Jez Hall and experienced former professional Junior McDougald, a forward with whom he struck up a dynamic partnership during the season.

Talking exclusively to The Hunts Post, Washington – who is a postman in St Ives – said: “Both of the visits were really promising – both clubs have a reputation for developing young players and helping them fulfil their dreams. That’s important.

“But I am excited about going to Peterborough – it’s a big step, but it would be silly not to give it a real go. It’s going to be interesting gauging myself against the players they have there.”

Washington’s trial is due to finish on Friday, his 20th birthday. He will be given time to think through his options. Both League One side Dagenham and the closer-to-home Cambridge of the Blue Square Bet Premier Division have indicated they are interested in signing him – but Hall has indicated the club will give the player all the time he needs to make his decision.

Hall told The Hunts Post: “Dagenham and Cambridge have made it clear that they want him but we will not be rushing the lad.

“We had a couple of positive days and at Dagenham we met John Still and his assistant Terry Harris and they were really nice blokes. I was impressed with what they had to say. I know Jez George at Cambridge anyway – he’s a great bloke.

“I think Conor might be feeling a bit overwhelmed at the minute. But it’s all about what he wants to do and what is right for him.”

Washington, who still has a year left on his current contract with St Ives, ended the season the United Counties Premier Division’s top goalscorer after finishing the campaign with a fine hat-trick in the club’s 4-1 UCL League Cup win over King’s Lynn Town at Yaxley. In 50 games, the striker scored 52 goals.

He is certainly a popular figure in the dressing, his teammates voted him players’ player of the season at the club’s presentation night on Saturday.
