ST IVES junior squash club capped a successful season by winning six of the eight finals they reached at the Cambridgeshire end of season Junior Squash competition last weekend.

Toby Reeves won the under-17 final 3-2 at the Cambridge Squash Club on Saturday, outplaying fellow county team player Ben Northfield from Leys School. Ives did not reach the U13 final, which saw Jeremy Harris from Comberton beat Hunts County's Gregory Goodwin.

In the girl's competition, Nayera El-Refee overcame Jasmine Luckett from Crown Lodge to win the U17 final 3-0, while her sister Nadine beat Tayla Mounter from Hunts County in the U13 final 3-0. Imogen Reeves rounded off a successful day by beating Paige Giddings from Crown Lodge to win the U13 Plate event 3-0.

On Sunday the boys U15 final almost saw an upset when Comberton's Sam Bradshaw went two games ahead against Tiaki Loza, but the St Ives player came through to win 3-2. Ollie Le Farge beat Joe Mitten from Cambridge 3-1 for the boys U15 Plate and Toby Reeves was stopped from taking a double when Euan MacNamee from Comberton beat him 3-1 to the U19 title.

The other finals saw Mounter lose the girl's U15 final to Comberton's Selina Leung who fought back from a game down, and in the mixed U11 final Scott Drewery from Crown Lodge beat Hunts County's Emily Fuller.

The Brian Fielding Shield for most improved junior player went to David Macdonald from Hunts County in the U17 section and clubmate Tayla Mounter triumphed in the U13 section.

St Ivo head coach Derek Reeves said: "It was a great weekend and the results show the hard work all the children have put in over the season."

The players had already celebrated their dominance of Cambridgeshire squash after winning all four county divisions.

Their success was confirmed when their division four team (U11) won both fixtures at the Hunts County competition on January 31-February 1. The first round was played at Comberton with Ives winning all their games convincingly, and the second game at the Ivo saw the hosts lose just one game. The result of 24-1 saw Ives crowned Junior County Division One Champions after already winning the three divisions below, a feat not achieved in the county for over a decade.

Reeves said: "The new scoring system, which encourages attacking play, combined with the strength and depth of the St Ivo Squash junior squad enabled us to win each division."

St Ives players, aged 10-16, train and play at the St Ivo Outdoor Centre on Saturday mornings and come from schools throughout Huntingdonshire.
