ST IVES Cycling Club riders got the cyclo-cross season underway on Sunday at the first round of the Eastern Cyclo- Cross League at Sible Heddingham in Essex.
Experienced cross rider Phil Peacock put his knowledge of the off-road circuit to good effect by being the first rider home for St Ives.
With the bright and breezy conditions drying the previous day’s rain, the conditions were fast on the mixed-terrain course.
Riding in the fastest event for seniors and elite veterans, Peacock maintained his pace and kept contact with the leaders, before eventually slipping back to finish in a respectable 22nd position overall. His time was good enough for ninth in the Elite Veterans category.
John Best showed promise in his first cross race, finishing in 32nd position, around 10 seconds a lap off his team-mate’s pace.
John Batchelor rode the event two years ago, but his prior knowledge did little to help his more humble position in 41st place.
Great Staughton rider Greg Simcock, riding for Team Corley Cycles, showed why cyclo-cross is his preferred discipline with a third-place finish, just 28 seconds behind the leading pair.
In the veterans event, Stuart Hocknell finished in 40th place overall, securing an excellent third place finish in his age category as the club’s top finisher.
