Godmanchester have turned to a familiar face in a bid to seize the initiative in the Tucker Gardner League Division One title race.

Town have drafted Indian spin star Kiran Adhav back into English cricket after previous overseas player Karabo Magotsi was released to return to his native South Africa.

Adhav is due to arrive in the country later in the week ahead of a return to action when bottom side Saffron Walden visit The Parks this Saturday.

The 31 year-old was the leading wicket-taker at Division One level last season when leading Godmanchester to within touching distance of the title.

He returns with them still boasting an unbeaten record this summer as they sit hot on the trail of current leaders Wisbech.

Godmanchester captain Matt Pateman said: “It will definitely give us an edge as far as I am concerned.

“Kiran’s stats speak for themselves although everyone will now know all about him now and it will be a challenge for him in that respect.

“Kiran was keen to come back in the winter, but we made the decision as a club to give a younger player the chance to shine.

“Ultimately it didn’t work out as we planned with Karabo returning home and his void remains in the batting line-up.

“But it was a no-brainer to bring Kiran back as soon as heard he was available and we now have a massive bowling weapon in addition to the seamers and two spinners already at the club.”

Godmanchester were able to call on the services of another top Asian player when beating struggling Warboys on Saturday.

Former Pakistani Under 19 captain Mohammad Azeem Ghumman was drafted in for the derby clash at Forge Way and featured in a century opening partnership with another international, Tariq Aziz, who has represented Portugal.

But Godmanchester failed to effectively build on those fine foundations after Aziz went for 44 and Ghumman was dismissed for 52. They eventually had to scrape home by two wickets with 10 balls to spare.

Pateman added: “It was a tense finish to a good game and we walked away with the maximum 25 points despite only playing at somewhere between 60 to 70 per cent of what we’re capable of doing.

“Warboys were gritty and kept going, and credit to them for that, but I would have been disappointed had we not got over the line.”

Jack Skidmore had earlier top-scored for Warboys with 63 in their posting of 194-6. Liam Gaynor impressed with bat and ball for the hosts as he followed up a useful 35 with 5-46.

Despite being beaten there was cause for celebration for Warboys as they climbed off the bottom of the standings and moved to within two points of escaping the relegation zone.
