A SOMERSHAM water-skiier has triumphed in what many believe to be the sport's toughest race with victory in Los Angeles.

Kim Lumley, 24, won the Catalina Island race - billed as the greatest water-ski race in the world - for the fourth time on Saturday, becoming the first European ever to do so.

Kim beat off competition from more than 100 competitors and raced at an average speed of 70mph to lift the trophy.

The Cambridgeshire sports personality of the year said: "The race went very smoothly. I had a bad cold and a sore back on Thursday and thought I might not be able to race, but as soon as I was up and skiing I was OK."

Kim completed the 70-mile course in one hour, four seconds to capture the title and was promptly whisked off for an interview on American television.

Water-ski racing is a test of balance and co-ordination, with racers perching on just one large ski as they skim across the surface.

Supported in the States by boyfriend Robert, Kim is also ladies Formula 1 water-skiing World Champion and plans to travel to New Zealand to defend her crown next year.

Kim, who works as a freelance fitness instructor, pays for all her training and travelling herself and is currently looking for sponsorship.
