THERE was a second-place finish for St Ives CC rider Malcolm Smith in round six of the Percy Stallard Road Race Series held in Bridlington at the weekend.
Smith led his competitors with 58 miles covered and heading into the final straight, with his tactic of riding in the gutter to force his opponents to pass on the wind side working well, but the race was eventually won by Paul Stubbs, who pulled out a five-metre lead across the line. Smith challenged strongly, leaving his other break-away companions 20 metres behind on his way to second place. A leading pack of four riders, including Smith and Stubbs, began to build a gap at the 40-mile mark and from that point on the four held the chasing bunch at bay. Next up for Smith will be a race on his home Sawtry circuit.
