NEV Nania and David Hurst told Godmanchester Rovers’ players to go and enjoy their Saturday off after they beat Mildenhall Town 4-0 at Bearscroft Lane.

The win was the in-from team’s sixth on the trot and Mildenhall were fourth in the Eastern Counties Premier Division, but since the January 12, they have beaten Kirkley & Pakefield, Ely City, FC Clacton, Brantham Athletic and Felixstowe & Walton United. Simply, last night (Wednesday), Mildenhall were never in the game.

“The players have got eight or nine days off now,” said Nania. “We just said to them that was absolutely fantastic, well done, you have had a great two months – enjoy your day off on Saturday.

“If we had taken all of our chances we could have had eight or nine goals.

“It’s a shame that we didn’t have a good start to the season but there you go…”

Goddy were excellent. They outplayed Mildenhall from start to finish with Mike Hyem setting up Joe Furness for his tap-in opener, before volleying home the second himself from close range seconds before the half-time whistle.

There were missed chances in the second half but the team continued to press and play some magical football – and, in the end, James Hall curled the ball into the far corner of the Mildenhall goal for number three, after more good work from Mike Hyem – and substitute Jordan Brockett found the same area with a wonderful free-kick from the right-hand side of the box that had the goalkeeper trailing in its wake.

Hall could have had a hat-trick but put two great chances wide, while his strike partner Paul Bass shot over twice with volleys and hit the wall with another free-kick. Chris Hyem even hit the crossbar with a high inswinging corner which had the goalkeeper well and truly beaten.

In goal, with Rob Mackney out injured, Goddy had St Neots Town’s Niall Conroy. Having just joined the Southern League club from St Ives Town, the 20-year-old didn’t have too much to do but did make two important saves, one with his face, to keep secure the team’s third clean sheet on the trot.

“Looks like we are on course for that top-eight finish,” said Nania, who has been keeping the pressure off his side but not talking up their chances in the run-in this season. But, on that evidence, a top-four finish would not be too surprising.

In fact, as things stand, Goddy are only 11 points off the top with 12 games left. The seven teams above them seem to be spilling points all over the place and no-one looks like breaking away.

All of a sudden there seems to be a lot of litter blowing about at the top there. Time for Goddy to clean up? Let’s not get too carried away just yet, eh?
