The cream of the United Kingdom’s young squash talent will be in the Hemingford Grey this weekend when the village’s squash club hosts the British under-23s Championships.

Six members of Hunts County Squash Club Sports Academy will feature over the weekend with matches beginning on Friday and the tournament continuing throughout the weekend.

The club itself will be represented by three experienced 22-year-old men and three teenage girls who and just starting out on the road to potential stardom.

Organiser and coach, Colin Griggs, said: “Daniel McGinn from Peterborough is an ex-Sports Academy pupil and current coach and player at Peterborough Squash Club, while Peter Dickinson, from Ramsey, is at Lincoln University and was on the last Sports Academy tour of Canada.

“Robert Dadds is from Huntingdon and was also on that tour. He has just turned professional after completing his degree in Essex and is the current world No 386 and 12th in the BSPA Grand Prix rankings.

“Dadds has a real chance of progressing in the sport,” added the coach.

“Nadine El-Refee, 16, is from Brampton and she will be going on the Sports Academy tour of Canada and Germany this summer with Emily Fuller, 15, also from Brampton, and Tayla Mounter, 16, from Colne.”

Charles Sharpes, another 22-year-old and the world No 62, is the top seed at the championship, and his main challengers are Declan James, James Earles and Nathan Lake. The top seed in the ladies’ competition is Carrie Ramsey.

“It’s going to be a busy and exhilarating weekend of squash.”
