ST Ives Town will find out on Friday afternoon which league they will be playing their football in next season after winning promotion to Step 4.

The club finished second in the Premier Division of the United Counties League behind Holbeach United – who did not apply for promotion – beating Spalding United into third, and now a meeting of the FA Leagues Committee at Wembley will determine whether they will be allocated to the Southern, Northern or Ryman League.

“We would like to follow the route of St Neots and be put in Division One Central of the Southern League,” said the club’s secretary, Simon Clark. “But if we don’t get placed in the league of our preference, it’s still a nice problem to have.”

There is no appeal if a club isn’t happy with its allocation – but St Ives’ Westwood Road ground is bang on the border of the three Step 4 leagues.

St Neots were allocated a place in the Southern League when they won promotion from the UCL two seasons ago, King’s Lynn Town were given a place in the Northern League last season and not so far to the east of Huntingdonshire, Soham Town Rangers play in the Isthmian League. Whichever one the Saints slot into though, the club will be travelling a lot further than it has in the past to play its games.

“The Southern League would be better for the club and its fans, travel wise,” said Clark.

The 12 members of the Leagues Committee – including Huntingdonshire FA’s county secretary Mark Frost – will meet at Wembley at 11am on Friday and Clark is hoping to hear news on a decision by 4pm.

St Ives won promotion on the very last day of the season with a 1-0 win when, ten minutes from the end of a game they had to win at Shepshed Dynamo, injured winger David Codd scored from 30-yards out. On Saturday, Cobb picked up the supporters’ player of the season award despite voting having taken place before that all-important goal.

The managers’ player of the season was leading goalscorer Karl Gibbs who joined the club from Peterborough Northern Star last summer and played a crucial part in the successful campaign.
