HUNTINGDON Town chairman Paul Hunt wants YOU to go along to watch his in-form side – FREE!

All you have to do is tear off the back page of this week’s Hunts Post (Huntingdon edition) and take it to Jubilee Park on Saturday for their big game against pre-season title favourites Spalding United.

On Saturday, Huntingdon beat AFC Kempston Rovers 5-1, their fifth United Counties League win on the trot – and on Wednesday night they disptched Desborough Town 3-0 as Ricky Marheineke’s side continues to take advantage of a run of six home games in seven matches.

But fewer than 100 fans turned up for the Kempston win and Hunt thinks the people of Huntingdon do not realise the standard of football they are missing.

He said: “We should be able to attract a couple of hundred people to the ground for games.

“And we have worked hard to encourage people to come – but I seriously believe people don’t realise the quality of the football being played by the club.

“I don’t think people realise the level the team is playing at these days. The game against Spalding United on Saturday is a big game and we are an ambitious club.

“I said when I came to Huntingdon that I wanted two promotions in five seasons. We are on track for that and we want to be a Southern League club.

“The next step after the Southern League, of course, is the Conference. We need people to be aware of that.”

In Ricky Marheineke, Huntingdon have an intelligent manager whose reputation in the game is growing with every win. In his first season in charge, Huntingdon won the United Counties League Division One title and now the team is in the Premier Division with realistic hopes of a top-six finish.

Marheineke said: “The chairman and the secretary Russell Yezek and other people behind the scenes have worked extremely hard to get people to come along, so I don’t understand why we aren’t getting more people.

“I look at St Ives and they have a fantastic following – and so do Godmanchester Rovers – but for some reason we don’t.

“I’ve been in charge for two years and the crowds have come up but there are plenty of people in Huntingdon who could come and support the club and we don’t quite know why they aren’t.

“Players thrive on crowds and we have beaten St Ives twice here in front of big crowds. A lot of those people were St Ives fans but some came out because it was a derby.”

So the message from Messrs Hunt and Marheineke is simple.

Pick up a copy of this week’s Hunts Post, tear off the back page, fold it up, stick it in your pocket, and take it to Jubilee Park on Saturday for the 3pm kick-off. Enjoy.
