The local pupils won the Physical Disability category at the Living Sport organised event which was staged at Cambridge Regional College.

The Hinchingbrooke team won all four of their matches to take gold with Impington Village College finishing second and Peterborough school Jack Hunt back in third.

Hinchingbrooke only just missed out on a medal double when finishing fourth out of 14 teams in the Pan Disability section.

That was won by Granta School, from Linton, with first-time entrants Sawtry Village Academy earning bronze medals for an impressive third place.

The tournament attracted a record entry of 10 teams from across Cambridgeshire with the successful teams going on to represent the county at regional level.

Rebecca Evans, of Living Sport, said: “It is fantastic to see so many young people enjoying playing Boccia and representing their schools. The competition is very popular and very competitive.

“This is the fourth year we have held the tournament at Cambridge Regional College. We are grateful for both their support with the venue and in providing young officials.”

Two St Neots schools took part in the Pan Disability event. Ernulf Academy teams finished eighth and 12th with Samuel Pepys taking 11th spot.

Boccia is a fast-growing sport similar to bowls but with players competing sitting down. It offers physically disabled youngsters the chance to compete all the way up to international level.

At schools competition level there is both a physical disability competition and a pan disability competition open to those with all types of disabilities.
