Sawtry Football Club will be running two additional teams this season – and have three coaches trained up to FA Level 1 standard – thanks to a £5,000 grant.
The country’s largest sporting charity, the Football Foundation, hand out £1.5million annually through its Grow the Game scheme and Sawtry were one of this year’s beneficiaries.
They will therefore be parading an A team for men, thus enabling more youngsters to continue playing football after moving up from junior level, and a ladies team for girls who are too old for junior football.
The Premier League and The Football Association fund the scheme, which is designed to increase participation in the national game by helping clubs meet the underlying costs of starting new teams.
Sawtry vice chairman Mike Patchett said: “We would like to thank the Football Foundation for this grant, which will enable the club to offer more youngsters the opportunity to continue playing football.”
Paul Thorogood, chief executive of the Football Foundation, said: “Congratulations to Sawtry Football Club for working with the Huntingdonshire FA to secure their £5,000 Grow the Game grant. It will help support football development in the area.”
