A GOAL in each half from Michael Byrne sent St Ives Town spinning to a 2-0 defeat at Stewarts & Lloyds Corby on Saturday.

Ives had made the early running but the hosts took the lead - albeit against the run of play - on 34 minutes, when Byrne netted a far post header.

And just nine minutes remained when Byrne sealed the home victory after latching on to a poor clearance.

The defeat halted the momentum Ives had gained from an emphatic 5-0 win over Irchester at Westwood Road just four days earlier.

Tom McGowan, Lee Ellison (2) Ozie Foster and Scott Fielding were on target for Ives that night.

Saints now switch their attention towards Thursday night’s UCL Cup semi-final at home against King’s Lynn Town.

The Linnets were reinstated in the competition last week at the expense of St Neots Town.

Neots were thrown out for fielding an ineligible player (Gavin Strachan) in the quarter-final between the two sides, which Neots won 2-1.

Ives are currently UCL Cup holders and it will also offer them a chance to make it through to a second cup final of the season, with St Neots awaiting in the Hunts Senior Cup final.

That game will be played on Monday, May 2 at Jubilee Park, kick-off 3pm.

After King’s Lynn, Ives are then back in league action at home against Northampton Spencer on Saturday.

In UCL Division One at the weekend, Huntingdon Town extended their unbeaten run to five matches - despite not playing particularly well - in a 1-1 draw at Wellingborough Whitworth.

Adam Lacey gave Town a 16th minute advantage, following up to score after Grant Robbins chipped against the frame of the goal.

But Richard Bailey levelled for the Flourmen 10 minutes into the second half and the home side went on to miss three one-on-one chances to win the contest.

Ricky Marheineke’s side are due to visit AFC Kempston Rovers tonight (Tuesday) before going to Rothwell Town on Saturday.

In Ridgeons League Division One on Saturday, Godmanchester Rovers were beaten 2-0 at Stowmarket Town.

That defeat came on the back of their 3-1 win at Ipswich Wanderers last Wednesday night. Paul Bass bagged a brace to take his goals tally for the season to 22 and returned the top of the scoring charts, while James Hall also netted in that win.

On Saturday, Godmanchester host Fakenham Town in the league.
