Huntingdon Town became only the second team to beat United Counties League champions Spalding United this afternoon.

Declan Rogers and Ben Seymour-Shove scored the goals that kept the Jubilee Park team in the race for second place and exorcised the ghost of last Tuesday’s poor performance at Peterborough Northern Star which ended in a 3-2 defeat.

Huntingdon manager reminded captain Mike Hyem of his pre-Peterborough words before the game against Spalding and was delighted with the reaction of his team.

Hayes told The Hunts Post: “On the bus to Peterborough Mickey said ‘if we win tonight it’s going to make the two games against Spalding boring’. At the time it was banter but I reminded him of it today and the lads were brilliant.

“Today they did everything we asked of them and more and proved why people talk about us as a good side.”

On Friday night, AFC Rushden & Diamonds beat Yaxley 1-0 to go above Huntingdon in second, but the 2-0 win over Spalding, who have been phenomenal all season, meant Huntingdon are now back in second with three league games to go and one game in hand over their Northamptonshire rivals. One of those three games, however, is against Spalding, this time at the Tulips’ place.

On the south coast, St Neots capped a week in which they had already won the Southern League Red Insure Cup by beating Tiverton Town with a fine 2-1 at Weymouth that saw them reach a half century of Premier Division points.

After a frustrating time in front of goal against Tiverton, Shane Tolley was back on the scoresheet against Weymouth adding to Ben Farrell’s opener.

In Division One Central only a second half penalty separated St Ives Town and their promotion chasing hosts Rugby Town in Warwickshire. The 1-0 defeat leaves St Ives also on 50 points with four games to play.

In the Premier Division of the Eastern Counties League, Godmanchester Rovers beat visitors Woodbridge Town 2-1 with both goals coming from striker James Hall.

The result leaves the teams still in fifth but within two points of Brightlingsea Regent in fourth. Goddy go to Brightlingsea on Tuesday night.

In Division One of the UCL, Eynesbury Rovers won 2-0 at Bourne to keep mathematically ahead in the race for that second automatic promotion place.

The team currently in second, Harrowby United, drew 1-1 with champions Oadby Town, so Eynesbury now just need to win four of their five remaining games to secure second.

Harrowby can only win another nine points from their final three games and are two points ahead of Rovers on 85. Eynesbury, on 83, can win a possible 15.

One of Eynesbury’s five games is against eighth-placed St Neots Town Youth & Saints, who lost 3-1 at home to Blackstones today.
