St Neots Men

A TENSE finale saw St Neots III cling on to a 4-3 victory at Cambridge South in a match blighted by monsoon-style conditions.

Saints dominated the early stages forcing the home goalkeeper into some acrobatic saves but it was Cambridge who took the lead on the break with a pinball-style deflected goal.

The home goalkeeper was again pressed into action as St Neots redoubled their efforts and Steve Moore soon tapped in an equaliser which was quickly followed by strikes from Sean Sanderson and Martin Newsom.

The hosts bounced back and put the Saints back line under pressure but a fine team move gave the visitors some much-needed breathing space with Sanderson netting his second of the match.

Substitutions from the home side resulted in some more pressure on the Saints goal and a third goal caused hearts to flutter but Saints held on for the win.

Meanwhile, St Neots IV fell to a narrow 4-3 defeat at rivals March IV. Saints took an early lead, fell 2-1 behind before pulling the scores level at 2-2 at the break. Slack defensive play saw Saints concede two further goals and although the visitors pulled one back towards the end of the match there was to be no equaliser.

St Ives Men

VISITORS Letchworth II were left in a spin by St Ives II as the home side romped to a convincing 6-0 victory.

A goalkeeping crisis for Saints saw Nick Grant prised out of semi-retirement to excellent effect while Letchworth were relying on the custodian from their usual V team.

Richard Corbett gave his team the best possible start in the third minute which was soon added to by an excellent individual effort from Alex Prestage.

Peter Holland and captain Michael Wilderspin finished off good team moves to make the score 4-0 at half-time and effectively end the match as a contest.

Goalkeeper Grant earned the plaudits of his team-mates for keeping Letchworth out as the visitors rallied but two late goals from Holland and Prestage gave the score a flattering gloss.

Meanwhile, a much-changed St Ives IV went down 2-1 at home to Letchworth IV despite Rob Glover's late consolation strike.
