A HEARTBREAKING last minute penalty denied St Ives Town a point as they went down 3-2 to unbeaten Deeping Rangers.

The hosts got off to a flying start and Saints found themselves two goals down inside 25 minutes with a Stefan Lewis own goal and Jon Stead strike putting the visitors on the back foot.

However, Saints rallied after the break with captain Will Fordham scoring his 13th of the season from the spot to pull a goal back for Saints before Lewis headed in an Ian King corner to equalise with six minutes remaining.

Saints seemed to have hung on for a valuable point but in the second minute of stoppage time defender Steve Poore left his leg outstretched and a visiting forward took a tumble in the box. Rangers captain Lee Ellison stepped up to break St Ives hearts from the spot.

Saints joint manager Jez Hall said: "We were lucky to only be two goals down at half time but the lads battled back fantastically well and it was devastating to lose a goal at the end.

"Overall, we probably didn't deserve anything from the game but we are bitterly disappointed to lose in that manner."

St Ives travelled to Ramsey for a Hunts FA Premier cup tie last night (Tuesday) and welcome Bourne Town to Westwood Road on Saturday.

St Neots Town, Eynesbury Rovers and Godmanchester Rovers all saw their fixtures postponed due to the heavy rain waterlogging pitches, while Huntingdon Town were without a game.

Godmanchester welcome Hadleigh to Bearscroft Lane on Saturday, while Eynesbury host Sleaford (kick off 2.30pm), Huntingdon face Daventry and St Neots travel to Raunds.

While fixtures across the region fell victim to the weather, Barley Mow and Buckden managed to complete their game, battling out a 2-2 draw in the St Neots & District Sunday League.

The visitors took the lead in the first half through a hotly disputed penalty and held on to their advantage at the break.

However, the home side rallied after the interval with Simon Titmus equalising with a blistering four-yard drive before Carl Ackerley converted a penalty to give his side the lead.

With time running out Barley Mow right back Scott Craddock's error let in Buckden for an equaliser to earn them a share of the spoils.
