HOCKEY ROUND UP East Men's League Division 1 Cambridge University 2nds: 1 St Ives: 3 St IVES travelled to Cambridge looking to build on last week's sound display and immediately took the game to the home side. St Ives pressed home the early advantage by earning a penalty corner which was eventually finished by the in-form Dave Land flicking high into the roof of the net. More goals were to follow and it was Land again who finished with a well-placed reverse stick shot. Excellent runs and skill from the forward pairings kept affording the away side opportunities and in one of these Darren Coles was hauled down and earned a penalty stroke duly dispatched by Alex Gutteridge. With half time approaching Ives looked comfortable but the home side picked up the pace and took a chance from a well-worked set play. The game became more stretched after the break with opportunities falling to both sides. Good saves from Ives goalkeeper Suneil Raval kept the home forwards at bay and Alex Cade, Man of the Match, was instrumental in keeping the tempo up for the opposition. Goals from Simon Bollom and Joe Brennan gave the 2nd's a 2-0 win against Peterborough 5th's but the 3rd's fell to defeat by the same score at Long Sutton. The 4th's suffered a 4-2 reversal at Newmarket and visitors St Neots 5th's inflicted a 2-1 defeat on Ives 5th's. St Ives Ladies were unlucky not to get more than a draw from the home game against Bourne Alexis Palmer netting the Ives goal and it was the same score for the 2nd's at Cambridge University 3rd's. Saints 3rd's smashed four past a static March who failed to score. Royston Ladies 1 St Neots Ladies II 1 SAINTS have usually been on the wrong end of some heavy defeats against Royston but the whole team played well as a unit to give the home side more than a few scares. They were unlucky to go down 1-0 when a shot that was going wide took a deflection off a defender leaving keeper Donna Selsby stranded. In the second half, the Saints defence was superb as Royston mounted a string of attacks and the visitors were left to rely on breakaways. On one of the few breaks Saints made, late call up Jenny Millward slotted home a rebound off the keeper for a deserved 1-1 draw. A frustrated Royston were unable to capitalize on their attacks and Saints went home rejoicing with two hard won points. St Neots Ladies 3rd's hammered Leighton Buzzard IV for six without reply. Julianna Dickinson netted four with Danielle Shipley and Charlie Gillam also on the mark. Huntingdon Ladies 2nd XI came back to earn a 2-2 draw against local rivals St Neots IV. Fiona Butler gave Huntingdon the lead after only eight minutes but Saints hit back to take a 2-1 lead. It was Emily Hill that saved the day with a late equaliser.
