ST Ives Town FC has secured the signing of local legend Junior McDougald to help them in their quest for league and cup glory this season.

Junior, 33, recently recovered from injury has been training over the past five weeks with the team. He began his career at Tottenham Hotspurs under Ossie Ardiles and Terry Venables, moved to Brighton under Liam Brady, then to Rotherham before having a spell with Toulouse in France. Dagenham and Redbridge followed his time in France where he was top goal scorer. Last season he played at Histon before he stopped playing to both sort out his injury and concentrate on his business.

St Ives chairman Neville Narnia was clearly overjoyed at what he described as: "The biggest signing the club have ever made". He said: "I heard from a mutual acquaintance that Junior was well on the roads to recovery following back surgery and offered him the chance to train with our squad. He has mixed in well with the lads, liked the club atmosphere and attitudes and he took little persuading to join". Management team of Jez Hall and Warren Everdell are equally pleased with their squad addition and feel he will bring an extra dimension to the team and hopefully more fire power, Neville and the new committee have brought a real professional attitude to the way the club is being run".

Junior said: "After long conversations with the chairman Neville Nania I saw the same ambition, belief and ethos around developing youngsters which I also believe in. I am fit and looking forward to helping the Saints take the next step forward".

Junior admitted he was pleased to be well on the way to recovery after his back problems and was pleased to be playing in the area were he started his football days as a youngster. Junior was at Hinchingbrooke School and played for Huntingdon Rowdies before being signed by Spurs.

Saints played St Neots last night (Tuesday, October 7) and McDougald was expected to be named in the squad.
