ATHLETES from Huntingdonshire were among the medals at a national athletics championship last weekend.

Tom Carey and Adam Charlton, both 22 and from St Ives and 19-year-old Chloe Edwards of Huntingdonshire Athletic Club brought home medals from the AAA meet at Bedford Athletics Stadium.

Tom, 22, picked up a bronze medal in the under 23s 400 metres hurdles event while Adam Charlton bagged a silver in the 400 metres for under 23s.

Chloe picked up a silver medal in the shot putt event with a throw of 13.27 metres in the under 20s category. Her coach and father John Edwards said: "Chloe has been struggling with a knee injury for a few years now and she needs to shake it off before she can produce her best.

"She's thrown over 14 metres in the past so she was a bit disappointed."

Adam ran 46.98 seconds to claim his 400 metres silver while Tom finished in 53.61 seconds for his 400 metres hurdles bronze. Tom also ran a personal best of 14.64 seconds in the 110 metre hurdles but just missed out on a medal.

Adam, who trains at St Ives athletics track, said: "The standard on the day was pretty high and I was pleased to come home with a medal as I've had a few injuries this season.

"It was my first AAA medal since 2003 when I was competing as an under 20 so it was nice to get that winning feeling again!"

Tom, who has just completed three years working with Colin Jackson's former coach Malcolm Arnold, said: "To be honest I was a little bit disappointed not to get the silver as I was ahead of the third placed guy at 398 metres but he just pipped me on the line.

"I was in a three-way photo finish in the 110m hurdles as well but missed out on a medal there too but I'm pleased to come home with something to show!
