St Ives delivered a 10-try super-show to complete their best-ever season in style.

The Bulls piled up the points in a 66-10 triumph at Daventry to bring the curtain down on a campaign which came complete with a third-place finish in Midlands Division Three East (South).

Paul Ashbridge and Ollie Raine sprinted in for tries inside the opening 10 minutes before a Daventry penalty briefly halted the St Ives charge.

It provided only temporary respite for the hosts as Albiee Tayedzerwa and OIlie Bartlett went over to help St Ives ease 26-3 clear by the break.

And the points continued to flow in the second period as the Bulls provided a feast of attacking rugby in the final 40 minutes of the season.

Will Nelson raced through the Daventry defence to touch down before Ashbridge gathered a deft Mickey Drake chip to add his second of the afternoon.

Daventry then grabbed their only try, but normal service was soon resumed as Raine completed a quickfire hat-trick to take his personal tally to four tries on the day.

A lung-busting burst from Stuart Cornwell created the final try of a fine season for Nelson while Ashbridge added a total of 16 points with the boot.

And with the dust still settling on this super season, St Ives skipper Josh Dear is already dreaming of an even better campaign in 2017-18.

He said: “We produced a superb finish to a very good season, but we need to be ready to work even harder during pre-season and put ourselves in a position to challenge for the title next season.”

Second-bottom St Neots were beaten 22-16 at Biggleswade last Saturday in their final match of a season which ends in relegation.

St Neots stage their annual rugby festival at The Common over the weekend.

It begins with a ‘Friday Night Lights’ tough rugby competition that is open to people of any age and ability.

A ladies’ 10s tournament is first on the Saturday menu ahead of the club’s annual charity match in which a St Neots Woodlands Warriors side – raising funds for the cancer centre of the same name at Hinchingbrooke Hospital - will face a team representing Zachery’s Aim – a fund set up to provide medical procedures and care for a local six-year-old cerebral palsy sufferer.

The 42nd annual mini rugby festival then follows on Sunday with budding talents in age groups from Under 7 to Under 12 showcasing their skills.
