St Neots continued their chase for a second Midlands Division Four East (South) title in the space of four years with a successful first outing of 2018.

Saints strengthened their grip on top spot with a 33-15 victory against Thorney at The Common last Saturday.

The leaders had to withstand some early pressure before hitting the front courtesy of a Stefan Gallucci try.

Nic Robinson was the next Saints man to touch down after racing in from the halfway line before Joe Woodgate got in on the act with a fine individual effort.

Thorney responded with a try of their own before the break and also started the second period on the front foot.

But defence quickly turned into attack for Saints as a high Woodgate kick out of defence flummoxed the visiting full-back and was gratefully gathered by Robinson, who again scampered in to score from long distance.

Saints allowed Thorney to claim two more tries to reduce their arrears, but any fears of a collapse were short-lived as Gallucci went over for the second time.

Woodgate sent over three successful conversions for Saints and Grant Hobbs did the honours on one occasion.

Saints go to mid-table side Wellingborough OG this Saturday.
