St Ives Rowing Club members were in competitive action for the first time in 2015 in the opening round of the Cambridgeshire Rowing Association Winter League on Sunday.

A host of masters and junior crews took part over the 2,600m course in Cambridge with further action to come in February and March as aggregate performances over the three events decide the winners.

Among those to race in the January instalment were the masters coxed eight of Dan Clough (cox), Gary Gilbey, Colin Edwards, Paul Ashmore, John Dolby, Henry Heylen, Dave Ash, Mike Kilby and Tony Bennet.

They are using the trio of CRA events as preparation for the London Head Masters 8s in April. The club are also exploring the possibility of attempting to qualify for the World Masters Championships to be staged in Belgium in September.

A Masters quad and several double and single scullers from both the junior and Masters ranks competed at Cambridge and all gave pleasing displays in difficult conditions.
