Ridgeons League Division One

Diss Town 1 Godmanchester Rovers 2

A SUPERB first Ridgeons League goal for Stephen David Hurst helped Rovers secure victory against promotion-chasing Diss.

Rovers extended their excellent run of form to three matches with a fine performance, despite falling behind after six minutes when Stephen Hurst put through his own goal.

However, Hurst's namesake cousin cancelled out the error with a magnificent equaliser on 33 minutes.

Collecting a loose ball in the centre circle, Hurst blasted a superb left-footed drive from 30 yards to level the scores.

Rovers continued their good play after the break when Lee Boon raced on to a long ball over the defence to score.

Godmanchester continued to defend solidly and could have extended their lead before the end.

Joint-manager David Hurst said: "We are beginning to reap the benefits of a lot of hard work."

* Godmanchester earned a fine 2-1 Hinchingbrooke Cup victory against Bourne Town last week.

Jon Brierley gave Rovers the lead with a strike on the half-hour and a Simon Osbourne header on 53 minutes booked a tie with St Ives Town.

* Godmanchester face FC Clacton at Bearscroft Lane on Saturday. Meanwhile, Rovers' 2-0 defeat at the Essex side has been voided after the Clacton side fielded an ineligible player.

The game will be replayed later this season.
