ROUND One of the year's HAJAC Winter League took place on Sunday on March Twenty Foot and March bypass.

Despite fishing well during the week, the area around Chain Bridge was almost devoid of fish with one section totally blank and a single ounce winning the other.

Anglers drawn in the other four sections mostly enjoyed good fishing. The match was won by John Taylor, fishing for Mark One Black, with 14lb 11oz of roach from the bypass, with Stanjay's Mark Pollard second from the peg above the old railway bridge.

Teamwise, host club March AC finished two points ahead of Stanjay Gold and Stanjay Red. Overall, with only seven teams in the league and the weather so unpredictable, all teams are still in the running.

UNDETERRED by the constantly changing level of the water, Frank Bevilaqua snatched a close victory in Sunday's match on the Narrows from a spot five pegs from the bridge.

The weights were disappointing after a very cold night and with the water running, backing up and changing levels several times during the match, anglers struggled to find fish.

Kevin Peacock was second from nearer to the bridge and Keith Rayment third from under the Willow tree.

RESULT: 1. Frank Bevilaqua 5lb 15oz; 2. Kevin Peacock 5lb 5oz; 3. Keith Rayment 5lb 2oz

The delayed Junior Christmas match was eventually fished on Saturday at Factory Bank.

Lewis Martin took first place from the end of the boards with 4lb 6oz, ahead of Ryan Judd and James Bartrum.

TUESDAY'S Golden Rod match fished on Willow Lake attracted fourteen anglers.

Brian Newman from Melbourn won with chub caught on the tip on worm and maggot. Dennis Holliday was second and Keith West third.

Headfen Lakes

HEADFEN Lakes staged the Sunday qualifier on Trev's Lake which fished surprisingly well after a very cold night.

Winner Steve Jackson caught four carp on a straight lead for 22lb 12oz.
