Brentwood 3-3 St Ives 1st XI ---

PAUL Swannell unleashed two thunderbolts and Alan Knox deftly added another to make the long journey to Brentwood worthwhile for Ives.

In a patchy start to the match striker Jamie Moise caused the keeper problems with a good strike but eventually the home side's use of the aerial ball got the result they wanted and they took the lead.

Saints took the game back to the hosts and Swannell made them pay for giving him a yard of room when he blasted the ball through a packed defence. Ives continued to press and Matt Chitty went close but as the half ran to a close a short corner gave the home side an interval lead.

The Brentwood defence was creaking in the second half, and only fine saves by the home keeper kept the lead intact. Just as it seemed Ives would grab the equaliser Brentwood snatched a third. Saints' reply was thunderous as Swannell again unleashed a shot that left the keeper with no chance and Knox followed it minutes later with some silky skills and a shot into the corner of the net to salvage a point.

St Ives II 2-3 March Town II

Most Read

ST IVES II narrowly failed to take something from their match against March on Saturday.

Ives enjoyed much of the early possession but wasted the chances they had created, and it cost them dear as March snatched a two-goal lead. The home side regrouped and Pat Cooney earned a penalty flick which Ashley Brown hammered home.

Any half-time plans went quickly out of the window as March bagged a third, giving Saints a real uphill battle. A James Aubrey strike offered some hope but the visitors hung on to the points at the final whistle.

St Ives III 4-0 Newmarket

ST IVES III made it four wins in a row with a comprehensive 4-0 drubbing of Newmarket.

Playing fast-flowing attacking hockey throughout, the score could have been higher but for some indifferent finishing. Rob Brand opened the scoring when he swept home a Dave Ranner pass, and man-of-the-match James Cahill scored a second midway through the first half with a spectacular drag flick.

Any fire that Newmarket produced early in the second half was extinguished when Richard Corbett's stray pass was deflected into the net by a Newmarket defender and Corbett added a fourth to complete the scoring.

Spalding III 4-1 St Ives IV

LOWLY Spalding handed out a lesson to the St Ives IV, and but for good defending by Bryden, Jones and Jenner and brave keeping from Rhodes the scoreline could have been worse for the visitors.
