Nev Nania was delighted with Godmanchester Rovers’s 2-1 win away at Diss Town on Saturday and hailed the performance of Latvian striker Niks Savalneiks who scored the winning goal on his debut.

“He did exactly what I thought he would do,” said the joint Goddy manager. “He was such a good foil for James Hall. We now have two hard working and pacy goalscoring lads to complement people like Jamie Blackwell going forward.”

Godmanchester remain in third in the Premier Division of the Eastern Counties League after the win and are sitting pretty in the race for promotion with Hadleigh United, who can’t go up, leading the way, ahead of Felixstowe & Walton United, who also decided not to apply for promotion.

The main threats to Goddy’s ambition come from those below them with Brightlingsea Regent, who have four games in hand, Gorleston, Haverhill Rovers and Brantham Athletic all cleared to climb the non-league ladder.

Charlie Bowen got Goddy’s first in Diss, with Tom Moran sent off at 1-1. The former Huntingdon striker Savalneiks made it 2-1 late on with a classy strike.

“There was a lot of hard work and application,” said Nania. “The match was played in high winds and the pitch although drying quickly was very bumpy making overall control of the ball very difficult indeed for both sides. This meant we had to adapt and play the conditions to suit which we did very well.”

Bowen back-heeled home a Hall cross in the 30th minute for Goddy’s 1-0 lead to Goddy but Matt Dixon equalised from the penalty spot in the 65th minute after Moran tripped the player in the area.

Savalneiks’s winner came in the 85th minute when he rifled home a Hall cross.

On Saturday Godmanchester are away again, this time at FC Clacton in Suffolk.

There was more frustration for both of Huntingdonshire’s Southern League sides at the weekend with St Neots Town’s away day to Dorset for their Premier Division game against Frome Town unsurprisingly postponed, and St Ives Town’s Division One Central trip to Potters Bar United also called off.

And now, Jez Hall, the St Ives joint manager, can see the season ending with clumps of Saturday, Tuesday and Thursday games – something that he says that clubs will just have to deal with.

“The thing is, I am doing all my homework on the teams we are due to play knowing that the game isn’t going to be on,” said Hall.

“We organised a friendly with Peterborough Northern Star and that is now doubtful – plus Saturday’s game against Beaconsfield must be in some doubt too. We have one free Tuesday left and if we get two more games postponed we are going to have to squeeze them in – this league has play-offs so there won’t be any extensions.

“But all the teams are in the same boat so it is something we will all just have to deal with.”

Tonight, St Ives should have been playing Royston Town in the league but because their opponents are still in the league’s Red Insure Cup, Royston’s quarter-final tie at St Neots took precedence. So St Ives organised a friendly against United Counties League side PNS. On Saturday, St Neots are at home to Burnham.

Huntingdon Town finally played a game last week – and beat Wisbech Town 2-1 in the second round of United Counties League Cup. But the manager Seb Hayes says he is worried that continual postponements are going to damage his club’s season. “This is the worst time I have ever had as a manager and it should be the best,” he said. “We would like to play a game at least once a week. I am worried this is going to come back and bite us at the end of the season.”

Ben Seymour-Shove and Chris Jones scored the goals as Huntingdon came from behind late on to beat Wisbech for the third time this season.

Huntingdon were due to play Cogenhoe United on Saturday but that game was postponed. On Wednesday (tomorrow night) they are due to be at home to Stewarts & Lloyds.

In Division One Eynesbury Rovers were due to play at Burton Park Wanderers tonight and have a home game against Raunds Town on Saturday when St Neots Town Youth & Saints should make the trip to Olney Town.
