STUDENTS from Huntingdonshire Regional College have been taking time out recently to help coach local primary school youngsters.

The women’s football team, who have players studying for a BTEC Sports and Exercise Science Diploma, have been passing on their skills to young hopefuls.

Coach Sophie Antonucci said: “The children all enjoyed themselves, with positive feedback from the teachers.

“The college community coaches taught the children various football skills including multi-directional dribbling and team awareness, combining it all with a bit of fun.”

The women’s team is aimed at developing and promoting the game, allowing greater access to top level coaching and opportunities for women aged between 16 and 19 years old. Alongside their academic course, students are offered two career pathways - either the football development centre or the fitness academy, where students study for gym qualifications.

Within the football development centre, students have the opportunity to gain top class coaching and playing opportunities in competitive British College fixtures.

There is also a chance to gain FA Certificates in coaching football.

The women’s team has seen great success, winning the Southern England Students Sports Association (SESSA) Women’s Football League in 2009.

The team is also home to international player Jade Bell, who represents England at England Colleges level.

Susanne Stent, Principal and CEO at HRC, said: “It is fantastic that we have such a great women’s side that are willing to support the local community.

“Women’s football is an ever growing sport and we are delighted to be involved.”
