RAMSEY Town produced a superb performance away from home at Pinchbeck to clinch the Peterborough Premier League title for the first time in their history.

The Rams had the opportunity to wrap up the championship on Tuesday against Moulton Harrox, when they were held to a goalless draw, but a convincing win on Saturday brought the title to Cricketfields Lane for the first time in the club's history. It seals back-to-back championships for the club, who won Peterborough League Division One last season without losing a game.

Ramsey's title was won by a late-season run in which they took 16 points from a possible 18, just as rivals AFC Fletton and Rutland Rangers faltered, and a defence which has not conceded in 630 minutes. They also scored 22 goals in that time, though manager Paul Taylor admitted their excellent run of form didn't prevent the nerves on Saturday.

"I think a few of the lads may have been feeling a few nerves before the game, but they are all good young players, and they started ever so bravely," he said. "To claim the title like that is a fantastic achievement, and I'm so pleased for them."

However, Ramsey will be competing in the same division next year after they missed the deadline for making improvements to their ground. The league demands that each club in the UCL Division One have a 50-seater stand, and along with other minor changes to turnstiles, the work would cost around 10,000.

"It's a bit galling to have worked so hard to win the title, and then to play in the same division again next year. But they are young lads, and they are committed to the club, so they may do it again next year," said manager Taylor.

Leading scorer Jamie Darlow opened the scoring against Pinchbeck on Saturday after half an hour when he beat the offside trap and finished calmly for his 26th goal of the season. Despite dominating play, Ramsey had to make do with a one goal advantage at half time, after a Steve Robson goal was ruled out for a foul in the build-up.

Ramsey had long spells of possession early in the second half, but had to wait until the hour before stretching their advantage, when Darlow crossed for Chris Talton to head home. With a two-goal lead, Ramsey relaxed, and the third came when Carl Taylor slotted home after a fine individual run.

Ramsey were comfortable in defence, and with Pinchbeck being contained, the Rams were able to push for further goals. The title was sealed five minutes from time, when Adam Taylor raced clear to smash home the fourth, and kick-start Ramsey's title celebrations.
