MID-TABLE Ramsey pulled off a surprise win at home to high-flying Khalsa in Tucker Two on Saturday.

The foundations of the victory were laid by openers Damien Clarke (64) and Andrew Stewart (56), who made Khalsa regret their decision to bowl first by amassing an opening stand of 151.

David Carlaw (40) joined the party at the fall of the first wicket and, combined with 39 extras, the Rams totalled 225-6 when they declared after 43 overs.

The loss of an early wicket for Khalsa did little to help their run chase, and Mark Edwards (5-103) kept chipping away for Ramsey with his medium pace seamers to stop the visitors getting up a head of steam. With runs evenly distributed down the order, including an impressive 66 from Kamran Humayun, the match built to a thrilling finale in which the final wicket fell with Khalsa at 221, just five runs short of the win.

Ramsey secretary Richard Clarke said the decision at the toss had been crucial. “The Khalsa skipper levelled some criticism at the wicket before a ball had been bowled. I think he missed on a good batting track and our openers made him pay for the decision.”
