Eynesbury Rovers 1-1 Wellingborough Whitworth

ROVERS boss Matt Plumb says his side’s next few league fixtures will ultimately determine where his side will finish in the table this season.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home against Wellingborough Whitworth – just a week after losing 3-1 at the same opponents – left Plumb’s side in sixth spot going into last night’s scheduled home fixture against Wootton Blue Cross.

Craig Lanham cancelled out Matt Freeman’s opener to secure a point for Rovers and, reflecting on the result, Plumb said: “I was a bit disappointed that we didn’t go on to win the game.

“Once we got the equaliser, I thought we’d go on and pick up maximum points but, unfortunately, we didn’t.

“The next three or four weeks will tell us if we are just a top six team or can push on to finish in the top three.

“Our problem has been our inconsistency.”

A minutes silence was held before the match in memory of ex-Eynesbury goalkeeper Gary Whitbread, whose funeral was held the day before.

Rovers created the early chances, with Ross West trying his luck from long range.

Ben Cole called the visiting goalkeeper into action as he fumbled the striker’s shot, before Luke Raftery put the ball behind for a corner. Cole also headed over from a Neil Morris free-kick whipped in from the right.

Whitworths’ first attempt was a lob from John Hazel, but he failed to get the ball over the outstretched arms of Ben Houseago.

However, in the 32nd minute, Houseago’s failure to punch a ball clear led to Freeman rolling the ball home to put the visitors ahead.

The Wellingborough club then created the better chances, as Hazel shot wide of goal on two occasions whilst another Freeman shot was tipped behind by Houseago for a corner.

After the break, Rovers pressed for an equaliser but Cole’s sharp turn and shot was saved by Lee Baxter.

Lanham’s header had Baxter at full stretch to make the save after good work by David Fisk and, shortly afterwards, Rovers’ young captain was off target with a long range drive.

But he levelled matters in the 67th minute, creating space for himself on the edge of the penalty area, before sending a low shot into the corner.

Both sides had chances to win the game, as Dan Woodhead nodded a West cross over the bar while in the last minute, a fierce Lee Booker shot narrowly cleared the crossbar.
