Huntingdon Town 2-1 Wootton Blue Cross

RICKY Marheineke reacted angrily, saying certain players let Huntingdon Town down, after the club lost 2-1 to Wootton Blue Cross on Tuesday evening.

The manager said he was “absolutely gutted, angry and frustrated,” after Town suffered their first home defeat of the season to a side he felt they should have beaten.

“I’m disappointed with the way we lost the game,” he said. “Certain players let me down ... let the team down. It’s almost as if certain players don’t care about this football club – as if they don’t care whether we win, lose or draw.”

After a run of four League and cup losses on the trot, Huntingdon had bounced back quite sensationally in recent weeks, beating Sileby Rangers 4-0 and Rushden & Higham United 7-1.

Going into Tuesday night’s game against the Bedford side who were below them in the United Counties League Division One table, expectations were again high.

Huntingdon even went 1-0 up from Dan Moyes on 15 minutes, but two goals in 15 minutes meant the visitors went into half time ahead. And to make matters worse, Joe Furness had missed a penalty just before the break.

“We were better in the second half,” said Marheineke, and Moyes, Ondre Odain and Joe Jordan all had chances – but the Blue Cross goalkeeper pulled off a brilliant save from another Furness penalty just before the end.

The manager continued: “We are making far too many mistakes in defence – the same mistakes game in, game out.

“I’ve tried being angry with them, I’ve tried putting my arm around them – now I am going to have to deal with the situation.

“We haven’t played a team from the top five yet and we have already lost two of our six league games. You can’t lose more than six games in this division and still hope to be promoted so we now have to win 26 of our remaining games.

“I’m still confident because it’s very early in the season but that kind of start doesn’t stand you in good stead.”

At training on Thursday evening, Marheineke said he would sit down with the players and thrash things out. “I still believe in them, they have potential and ability – which is why I am so frustrated,” he added.

On Saturday, sixth-placed Huntingdon travel to Northamptonshire to face 13th-placed ON Chenecks, another team below them in the table.
