In all, 15 members of the club Penney organises took part in the 2012 Charity Spinathon, and kept four bikes going for the full 12-hour period. The event featured a total 60 teams pedalling indoor spinning bikes through gruelling exercise classes from 8am to 8pm. Penney, who manned one bike for the whole 12-hour period, was fuelled by nothing more than a sandwich box full of rolls and energy drinks. Climbing off the bike when his ordeal was over, he said he was going straight home for a shower and a beer. Among the other cycling heroes on the day was Terry Cooke, who rode six hours continuously before handing over to Mia Mead for the final six hour shift. Jackie Wren used the event as a preparation for her Ironman Triathlon later this year and rode for a four-hour session before competing in the Folkesworth 15-mile running race on the Sunday. Other members competing in two hour shifts were Moira Burgham, Pete Thompson, Steve Young, James Powley, Peter Holt, Gary Mead, Emma Penney, and John and Andrea Batchelor.
