St Ives Swimming Club coach Val Cummings wins gold medal at the ASA East Region Open Water Championships

BEING over 50 was certainly no barrier for Val Cummings as won regional gold at the ASA East Region Open Water Championships in Trowse, near Norwich earlier this month.

Val, a level two coach at St Ives Swimming Club, has been teaching local children to swim for the past 10 years.

But this was her moment in the spotlight and, having finished as the third-fastest female in her age bracket at the two-mile British Gas Great East Swim event in June, she took on the 3k East Region event.

She had been training hard, having joined the open water section of BRJ RRC to get some experience in the lead up and it paid off.

As well as winning the 50-59 women's age category, Val also beat all of the 40-49 year-old women in the process too.

She was awarded the gold medal for the ASA East Region and, as an added bonus, took home the Cambridgeshire county gold medal - as there is no separate county open water championships.
