Only two local teams made it into action last Saturday – and both were beaten by identical scorelines.

St Neots Town slipped to a 2-0 reverse at title-chasing Leamington in the Southern League Premier Division, while Godmanchester Rovers were beaten at Brantham Athletic in a Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division clash.

And the similarities don’t end there as both bosses were left seething by controversial penalty decisions, which went against their sides.

It was a spot-kick not given that frustrated Saints chief Matt Clements on the hour of their loss.

He felt red-hot striker Jevani Brown was dragged down by two defenders only for referee Robin Cox to wave play on.

Saints had fallen behind nine minutes earlier to a Jack Edwards header and they were condemned to defeat by a second Leamington goal from substitute Richard Gregory, which arrived with his first touch and just four minutes after the penalty appeal.

“It was a clear penalty and a game-changing moment,” said Clements. “We should have had the chance to get ourselves level from the spot only a few minutes after going behind.

“But it was a day in which we lacked a bit of cutting edge and were punished for the mistakes we made.”

Godmanchester chief Chris Hyem did see a penalty awarded against his side as they were beaten at Brantham.

It arrived during the second half and the hosts took full advantage to double their lead, although Hyem is still none the wiser to what offence actually took place.

It served only to double his disappointment after Rovers had seen a goal from debutant striker George Couzens ruled out for a foul.

Hyem admitted: “The referee decided to give a foul when we scored a fair goal, and then also gave them a penalty for absolutely nothing.

“Both decisions are very frustrating as we were on top at the time and I feel sure we would have got something from the game.”

St Ives’ home clash against Hitchin in the Southern League Premier Division was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

The United Counties League Premier Division fixtures involving Eynesbury Rovers (home to Sileby Rangers) and Huntingdon (away to Harborough Town) were also called off.
