Huntingdon boss Bob Warby admits individual mistakes have to stop if Town are to avoid finishing bottom of the United Counties League Premier Division for the second successive season.

Warby saw his side beaten 3-1 by Harborough at Jubilee Park last Saturday despite bossing much of the contest and playing what he called ‘beautiful’ football.

All the goals arrived in the second half as Huntingdon fell behind on the hour before delivering a quick reply courtesy of Jordan Brockett’s first goal since returning to the club recently.

He provided the finishing touch to a slick counter-attack after home debutant Paul Chappel had nodded a Ben Colmer cross down into his path.

But Warby’s men fell behind again with a quarter-of-an-hour to go before goalkeeper Andrew Hewitt saved a penalty.

Harborough’s clincher arrived with five minutes remaining and Huntingdon finished with 10 men after Hewitt was dismissed following a flare-up with a visiting player.

It was a defeat which sent Town tumbling back to the foot of the standings due to possessing an inferior goal difference compared to fellow strugglers, Kirby Muxloe.

Warby said: “We came so close to what would have been a well deserved win, but we just couldn’t put the ball in the net.

“The Harborough goalkeeper pulled off half a dozen good saves as we opened up their defence time and again.

“He was arguably the man of the match whereas my own goalkeeper had literally nothing to do until saving the penalty – but the only thing that truly matters is the result and we were beaten.

“We played some truly beautiful football at times and never looked like giving up. I’ve urged the lads to focus on those positives as we try to change the mindset that has enveloped the club in recent years.

“But we must cut out the basic mistakes that have been costing us. We conceded two free headers to the same Harborough player in this game.

“We are killing ourselves with lapses of concentration and basic errors at key moments.

“We have to address those things individually and collectively by taking responsibility.

“As soon as we do that, we feel we will be strong enough to put a run together and prove a lot of people wrong.”

Huntingdon have the opportunity to climb back off the bottom of the Premier Division when travelling to Wisbech tonight.

Warby’s men then have a run of four successive home fixtures – which starts with a clash against Northampton side ON Chenecks this Saturday – to look forward to.
