Player-boss Chris Hyem has urged his Godmanchester Rovers players to take full advantage of a run of three home games in the space of six days.

A hectic spell lies ahead at the David Wilson Homes Ground where Rovers entertain Long Melford tonight (Wednesday), bottom side Swaffham this Saturday and Saffron Walden on Tuesday.

And Hyem hopes his men can cash in to kick-start a campaign which has spluttered somewhat since the turn of the year.

He said: “We’ve got 10 games to go and we need to focus on finishing the season as strongly as possible.

“It’s obviously been a tough one for the club with so many players moving on last summer, and then the change of management in October.

“I still want us to get ourselves into the top half of the table and we need to take plenty of points from the next three home games.

“Long Melford are level with us and Saffron Walden are a few points above us, so they’re big matches in terms of league position. We also need to ensure there are no slip-ups against Swaffham.

“Ideally I’m looking for all nine points that are up for grabs. I would probably settle for seven in all honesty, but I will be disappointed with anything less than six.”

Hyem has boosted his squad with two higher-level captures.

Former Rovers man Jonny Hall, a left-back who has been at St Neots and Soham this season, has returned to the club. Histon midfielder Ross Munro has also joined for the rest of the campaign.

Rovers were beaten 2-0 at Brantham Athletic last Saturday when seeing two major decisions go against them.

Debutant striker George Couzens, who has arrived on loan from Biggleswade Town, saw an equaliser ruled out for a foul early in the second half.

And the locals were then stung by another controversial call at the other end when Brantham were awarded a penalty, from which they doubled their advantage.

Hyem added: “George went in for a 50/50 challenge with the Brantham goalkeeper and scored. It was perfectly fair and the goal should have stood.

“To have that go against us, and then see Brantham awarded a penalty for absolutely nothing, was really frustrating.

“I have no idea what the referee spotted, but those decisions killed us in a game I felt we could have got something from.”
