NON-LEAGUE FOOTBALL: Unbeaten run comes to an end as Godmanchester Rovers are sunk by solitary goal at the seaside

Assistant boss Chris Hyem wants an instant response from Godmanchester Rovers.

The local side - managed by Ollie Drake - saw their fine unbeaten run come to an end last Saturday when being beaten 1-0 at Great Yarmouth in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division.

The only goal arrived after a quarter-of-an-hour and that proved enough to end a nine-match streak without defeat in all competitions. Rovers couldn’t find a leveller on a day when they failed to hit the heights of recent performances.

“It was one of those days where it didn’t happen for us,” said Hyem. “We were pretty poor to be honest, but we still created more than enough chances to get a result.

“Great Yarmouth had two shots all afternoon and one of them ended up in the back of the net.

“Everyone is disappointed to see the unbeaten run come to an end, but we can’t sit around feeling sorry for ourselves.”

Hyem certainly does not want Rovers to dwell on the defeat on the Norfolk coast. Instead he expects them to launch another hot streak immediately to ensure they hold onto their position in the Premier Division top six.

That process can start this Saturday when they entertain Haverhill Rovers at the David Wilson Homes Ground.

Hyem added: “We’ve done ever so well to get ourselves up into the top six and we’ve now got to work even harder to make sure we stay there.

“We have a strong squad and should give any team at this level a good game. I’m confident we’ll get a reaction against Haverhill and start moving forward again.”

The appearance of defender Elkanah Sibanda as a late substitute did provide at least one positive at Great Yarmouth.

Sibanda has missed much of the season with a knee problem and Hyem described his return as being like a new signing.

Rovers saw a Hinchingbrooke Cup trip to lower-level Wisbech St Mary postponed last Wednesday. That match has now been provisionally rescheduled for next Wednesday, January 24.
