It is just under a month since Chris Hyem was handed the Godmanchester Rovers hotseat and his first job in management.

The popular former player took control on October 25 – a couple of days after the surprise resignation of Adie Cambridge.

Hyem inherited a team in the Thurlow Nunn Premier Division bottom three, but four games and 10 points later he has his sights firmly fixed on climbing into the top six.

It might sound like an ambitious target, but Rovers are already within eight points of the elite bracket.

“I’m absolutely over the moon with the way my first month as manager has gone,” said Hyem.

“We’re unbeaten in the league, we’ve picked up 10 points out of a possible 12 and the lads are showing a lot of improvement.

“I was confident we could climb out of the relegation zone pretty quickly and that is exactly how it has worked out.

“But we are still nowhere near being the finished article and we have to continue to make progress.

“I’m pushing for the top six and I believe it can happen. We’re only eight points off Kirkley & Pakefield, who are currently sixth, and there’s no reason why we can’t close that gap over the remainder of the season.”

Rovers’ latest success came last Saturday when they saw off Walsham-le-Willows at the David Wilson Homes Ground.

Red-hot hitman Arran Mackay helped himself to a second-half hat-trick to earn a 4-1 victory after a classy Ben Keating free-kick opener had been cancelled out in the opening period.

Mackay restored the lead just before the hour after being picked out by Chae Simons and the same supply line was responsible for his second goal.

And Mackay completed his treble when being in the right place at the right time after a Keating shot had been spilled.

Hyem, pictured right, added: “Arran was spending too much time outside the box for my liking. We’ve corrected that and the goals have started flowing as a result.

“He’s very quick, very dangerous and one of those strikers capable of taking almost every chance that comes his way.

“There was a spell of about 10 minutes in the second half at 1-1 where I couldn’t quite work out what was going on.

“We looked like a Sunday league side, but managed to get our second and then looked unstoppable.”

Defender Tom Moran made his Rovers return last Saturday following a spell at Histon and another former favourite, Tom Spark, is back after leaving St Neots Town earlier this week.

Two players have departed with striker Jake Burton joining Cambs League Division 2B side Ramsey Pavilion and French utility man Guy Mailancol has also moving on.

Rovers face a stiff test at second-placed Stanway this Saturday.
