St Neots Town snapped their Southern League Premier Division losing run yesterday – but still emerged disappointed.

Saints gained a welcome point but allowed 10-man visitors Bishop’s Stortford to hit a late equaliser in a 2-2 deadlock at the Premier Plus Stadium.

Dylan Williams fired against a post midway through the opening period, but Saints fell behind seconds before half-time when Darren Foxley struck after veteran Jamie Cureton’s shot was blocked.

Matt Clements’ side were fortunate not to see their deficit double in the opening minute of the second half as Jordan Westcott headed wide when left unmarked, and they made the most of that reprieve.

Saints were back on level terms within a minute as Nabil Shariff pounced to convert a rebound after debutant Jordan Norville-Williams struck a post following a surging run from deep inside his own half.

That goal sparked a fine spell for the hosts. Super saves from Bishop’s Stortford goalkeeper Callum Kitscha thwarted Dion Sembie-Ferris and Williams before Kyran Wiltshire saw a goalbound effort blocked and another Sembie-Ferris strike was cleared off the line.

But Saints eventually completed the turnaround in the 63rd minute when Williams grabbed his 13th league goal of the season, and they were also left with a numerical advantage when Bishop’s Stortford man Jack Thomas was dismissed for violent conduct following an incident in which Saints skipper Luke Knight was also booked.

But Saints failed to close out the contest as they allowed the 10-man visitors to level with four minutes to go as George Casey was left free at the far post to finish.

“It was a much better performance and important that we stopped the run of defeats,” said boss Clements. “On the other hand, it was disappointing to concede the late equaliser and it has to go down as two points dropped.

“But there were plenty of positive signs and that was encouraging after a difficult spell lately.”

St Neots dropped to 14th in the Premier Division standings yesterday. They have seven matches remaining this season.
