Revenge was a dish served on a cold night by Eynesbury.

Rovers erased the memory of their worst defeat of the current season when swooping for a 2-0 success at Yaxley on Tuesday.

The victory cemented their second place in the United Counties League Premier Division standings and completed a double over a set of opponents who had dumped them out of the FA Vase by a 7-0 scoreline.

Yaxley probably didn’t even have seven efforts on goal in the latest clash between the sides on the slick 3G surface at In2itive Park.

Clear opportunities weren’t exactly in plentiful supply for Eynesbury either, but that doesn’t matter when a player possesses the eye for the spectacular in the way Tom Coles does.

The midfielder could hardly have made a more impressive breakthrough just after the hour than with a fierce 30-yard drive that flew past Yaxley keeper Aaron Butcher.

Home substitute Joe Butterworth fluffed a fine chance to equalise just a minute after his introduction on one of the rare occasions that a makeshift Rovers defence – featuring midfielders James Freshwater and Jack Warwick – was opened up.

But it was Eynesbury who struck again to seal victory with 13 minutes to go. Coles turned provider as he delivered from the right for leading scorer Craig Smith to convert.

They received a late let-off when an Andy Furnell header bounced against an upright and back into the grateful arms of Jamie Greygoose, but there is no doubt their victory was well deserved.

Huntingdon made progress in the Hinchingbrooke Cup on Wednesday night.

The UCL Premier Division bottom side beat Division One outfit Raunds Town 3-2 in a first-round tie at Jubilee Park.
