Chris Hyem insists he is more than ready to step into the world of management following a whirlwind appointment at Godmanchester Rovers.

The popular 29-year-old has been handed the reins of the struggling Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division club, where he spent much of his playing career.

Rookie boss Hyem’s appointment was confirmed on Tuesday, less than 48 hours after the surprise weekend resignation of Adie Cambridge, who himself had only taken charge in the summer.

Hyem, who has been playing at higher-level Histon this season, and may continue to pull on his boots in his new role, said: “I’ve always been keen on moving into management and I feel as though I’m ready to do it.

“Age is not a massive thing as far as I’m concerned. There are plenty of good, young managers about at all levels of the game and hopefully I can become another one.

“Goddy is a special club for me after having many years there as a player, but I know I am taking on a big job.

“First and foremost it is all about ensuring we survive in this division and then we can look to progress.

“I’ve got some good friends who will help me out if they can, and I’m confident I can bring in a few players.”

Hyem had a watching brief on Wednesday night when third-bottom Rovers were unfortunate to be beaten 3-2 by table-toppers Mildenhall at the David Wilson Homes Ground.

A Rovers side under the control of caretaker boss Neville Nania fell behind in the 17th minute, but were level 10 minutes later as Chae Simons struck.

They then hit the front through Arran Mackay, back in a striking role, jut before the hour, but the advantage was short-lived.

Mildenhall levelled little more than 90 seconds later and then hit a late winner.

Hyem now takes control tomorrow when Rovers entertain top-six side Thetford. They drew 1-1 in the reverse fixture earlier this month.

Nania is now set to assist Hyem along with another of the new boss’ former managers, David Hurst.

No new signings are expected ahead of tomorrow’s clash.
