Manager Ollie Drake saluted the scoring power of his Godmanchester Rovers side after a third successive Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division victory.

Rovers triumphed 4-2 at bottom side Wivenhoe Town last Saturday – a victory sealed by what Drake described as a ‘moment of magic’ from Jack Chandler.

The wideman completed the scoring in Essex as Rovers upped the ante in the second period after briefly being behind and then pegged back in the opening half.

They fell behind early on but Arran Mackay soon had them on level terms as he struck for the second time in as many games.

Mackay has been playing in defence of late, but returned to an attacking role following the capture of Charlie Bowen, who impressed during his return to the club after a season-and-a-half away at Newmarket Town.

Simon Unwin then put Rovers ahead, but the advantage proved to be short-lived as the lowly hosts restored parity before the break.

Two terrific goals eventually earned Drake’s men the points after the interval. Matty Allan completed a fine team move to put them back ahead before Chandler struck in style.

They have now found the net 19 times in their last five games in all competitions – a prolific run they will aim to continue when hosting high-flying Coggeshall Town at the David Wilson Homes Ground this Saturday.

“Picking up victories when not completely at our best is a big positive,” said Drake. “And the same applies to our scoring power.

“Myself and Chris (assistant boss, Hyem) have reiterated that we will win games if cutting out the defensive mistakes as we have so much quality and so many options going forward.

“We showed that again on Saturday when scoring two excellent goals in the second half to win the game.

“We lost 2-0 at Coggeshall very early in the season. We didn’t get a sniff in all truth after missing a couple of early chances.

“But our squad and style of play have changed immensely since then and I’m excited to see the difference against a team going very well in second place.

“Teams are going to look to be tight against us due to the amount of goals we’ve scored. That’s something we expect to happen and it is a compliment to our players.”

Before then Rovers go to Histon in the third round of the League Challenge Cup tomorrow night (Tuesday).

Drake is hoping for a better display from his team than when they were ‘embarrassed’ in a league clash at the same venue back in August. They were walloped 4-1 on the occasion.

The two teams were due to meet in the Premier Division last Wednesday, but the clash fell victim to a waterlogged David Wilson Homes Ground pitch.
