St Neots Town manager Matt Clements urged his players to be more ruthless in front of goal – after having to settle for a midweek point.
They had to settle for a 2-2 draw in a Southern League Premier Division trip to Chesham on Tuesday.
Saints defender Taylor Parr scored twice in the space of four minutes early on.
He turned an Oran Swales cross into his own net to hand the hosts an advantage, before quickly atoned for that error when heading home a Dylan Williams corner to level.
After two goals in the opening 16 minutes, there were no further changes to the scoreline until the closing 14 minutes.
Saints hit the front when Scott Sinclair rifled in a loose ball after Williams had seen his shot parried.
But the advantage proved to be short-lived as Chesham substitute Shane Bush was left unmarked to level five minutes later.
Clements said: “It’s a good point on the road which was only marred by the fact that despite dominating the second half we were not ruthless enough to finish them off and were also slightly naïve to let them back into the game.
“But I’m proud of this group. We’ve had to juggle injuries and suspensions lately, but we have still maintained a good level of performance.
“To be honest, a 4-2 or 5-2 win wouldn’t have flattered us.”
St Neots now sit 16th in the standings but are only a couple of points off the top half with Clements insisting they are on the right track to reach their go o mid-table ecurity.
Saints hit the road again this Saturday when travelling to Farnborough ahead of a Tuesday date at home to Hitchin at the Premier Plus Stadium. They are a repeat of the club’s first two fixtures of the campaign when they were beaten by a solitary goal against Farnborough before hitting a dramatic leveller to snatch a point in a 2-2 draw at Hitchin.
Clements added: “This season is all about moving forward as a club. There are no big targets and no big statements – we’re just keeping our heads down and getting on with the job.
“Sitting in mid-table represents massive progress. To be in that position after a quarter of the season is very pleasing and the challenge now is to stay there.
“The boys are developing as a group and I do believe there is a lot more to come from them.
“It’s important to pick up points against teams around us in the table. We did that at Chesham – now the aim is to do the same against Farnborough and Hitchin.”
Midfielder Kyran Wiltshire is suspended against Farnborough after his late dismissal in a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Weymouth last night. He also sat out the Chesham clash after picking up five cautions this season.
Taylor Parr is also out of the Farnborough game after accumulating the same number of bookings, but Ronanye Marsh-Brown is available following a three-game ban for a sending off during his recent debut.
