St Neots Town have appointed Matt Clements as their new manager.

The former Godmanchester Rovers boss succeeds Andy Davies, who resigned earlier this month, in the Saints hotseat.

Clements, who has been number two at Histon this season, inherits a squad sitting two points from safety in the Southern League Premier Division relegation zone.

Director of football Iain Parr said: “We were inundated with CVs from people keen on our managerial position, but we decided to approach Matt.

“We spoke to him back in January after the resignation of David Batch as feel he understands the club’s infrastructure and has the ambition to be a good fit.

“He is regarded as a great coach and man manager, and I feel he has the potential to excel at Step 3 and beyond with the right club.”

Clements, who was a high-class athlete in his younger days before playing professionally for Cambridge United, will have a watching brief when Saints travel to Dunstable Town in their first fixture of 2017 on Monday (1pm kick-off).

Lee Clarke, who has been acting as interim boss alongside Dan Gleeson, will take the team at Dunstable before continuing in a player/coach role under Clements.

Gleeson has now left the club less than a month after arriving. He was previously manager at local rivals Cambridge City.

Saints have failed to win any of their last 10 competitive fixtures. They’ve conceded 32 goals in that time and have also gone three matches without a goal.

The arrival of new attacking player, Jevani Brown, should provide more threat. Brown has joined from Northern League Division One South side Stamford AFC, whom he helped to knock Saints out of the FA Cup earlier in the season.

But another frontman has subsequently departed. Sam Mulready confirmed his exit on New Year’s Day after less than three months as a St Neots player.
