It was a case of fourth time lucky for Godmanchester Rovers last night - as they enjoyed a five-star scoring spree.

Ollie Drake’s side breezed to a 5-0 success at lower-level Wisbech St Mary in the opening round of the Hinchingbrooke Cup.

They dominated a tie which had been postponed on three previous occasions. Leading scorer Jack Chandler settled the contest with a first-half hat-trick.

Substitute Matty Allan and birthday boy Joe Furness - who tucked away a penalty earned by Chandler - then got in on the act in the second period.

“The pitch was difficult, but fair play to Wisbech St Mary for getting the game on,” said Drake.

“Unfortunately for them, they came up against a group of Goddy players who have really missed their football over the past week.

“We were absolutely first-class and we dominated the game from start to finish.

“My goalkeeper didn’t have a speck of mud on him. I don’t remember him having a single save to make.

“We were solid at the back, bossed it in midfield and electric when going forward.”

Rovers now have a chance to avenge their most painful defeat of the season at the quarter-final stage when travelling to Deeping Rangers on a date still to be confirmed.

Drake’s men crashed out of the FA Vase when surrendering a 3-1 lead to lose 4-3 to Rangers back in November.

He added: “We’ve got the chance for revenge against Deeping - and I know everyone will be determined to take it.

“We know we should have put them out of the FA Vase and what happened that day still hurts.

“But we have a different side now and hopefully we can put right that self-inflicted wrong.”

Rovers face a trip to FC Clacton in the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division this Saturday. Three points there will boost their hopes of a top-five finish.

And they turn their attention back to knockout competitions on Tuesday when travelling to Thetford for a League Challenge Cup quarter-final.

Drake added: “We feel we’ve done well enough this season to warrant some silverware - and we’re all determined to make it happen.

“There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that we have the quality to seriously challenge for the two cups we’re still in and also finish in the top five in the league.”
