Manager Bob Warby insists Huntingdon must stop being architects of their own downfall if they are to stand any chance of climbing off the bottom of the United Counties League Premier Division table.

Town slipped to a 5-0 defeat at Northampton side ON Chenecks last Saturday to remain six points adrift at the foot of the standings.

It was a match which followed a typical pattern with Huntingdon gifting their hosts the goals that led to a 23rd loss in 29 league games this term.

Warby admitted: “If you don’t ever learn from mistakes, you can never move forward – and that’s the situation we find ourselves in.

“Week after week, we are architects of our own downfall and other clubs must just love playing against us because they are guaranteed golden chances to score.

“The first ON Chenecks goal came from one of our own attacks when a lame cross was cut out and cleared, and the second was a stupid penalty.

“The third was an unchallenged shot from a poor clearance, and the fourth and fifth goals were free headers - all the sort of mistakes we repeatedly make.

“We constantly cut our own throats in games and that is why we are adrift at the bottom of the table.

“The six games where we have made good decisions are those in which we have picked up points, but that is nowhere near enough.

“The results are my fault as I recruit and educate the players. Therefore I take full responsibility for the lack of improvement in the year I’ve been manager.

“Yes, we have more league points than in the whole of last season, but that’s irrelevant when we are not even close to being competitive.

“There is a long way to go and I genuinely believe we can turn this around, but it’s going to take longer than I thought.

“It may involve taking a step down, but I’ll fight tooth and nail to avoid that happening.”

Huntingdon have successive home games to complete January. The first of those is this Saturday when Leicester Nirvana visit Jubilee Park.

Town crashed out of the Hinchingbrooke Cup last Wednesday when going down 5-1 at lower-level Wisbech St Mary.

Warby was only able to select a bare 11 players, including injured striker Addie Staffieri, who scored their goal.
