Prolific striker Tom Meechan is set for a surprise return to St Neots Town.

Boss Matt Clements has confirmed loan deal is in place to sign Meechan for a month from National League South side Hungerford.

The 26 year-old enjoyed a terrific spell with Saints back in the 2015/16 season – slamming in 26 goals at Southern League Premier Division level to earn a move to League Two club Newport County.

He swapped a career as a maths teacher for a shot at the professional game in February, 2016, but it has since been a frustrating time for the frontman, who also struck a staggering 54 times for Godmanchester Rovers in the previous season.

He spent much of last term on loan at Weston-super-Mare before joining Hungerford in the summer, but he is yet to make an impact at the Berkshire club.

Clements said: “It’s no secret that we are looking for more firepower and we all know what Tom can do in front of goal. His scoring record speaks for itself.

“He hasn’t played a lot of football in the last 18 months, but he is a natural goalscorer and putting the ball in the back of the net is something we have struggled to do at times this season.

“We have created plenty of opportunities but have already dropped four points as far as I’m concerned through not putting enough of them away.

“Hopefully that will change with Tom on board during what is a busy spell with a lot of midweek games coming up.

“Tom still lives in the South-West and the travelling may be an issue long-term, but the loan is a move that suits both parties really well.”

Meechan is expected to train with Saints on Thursday before finalising the loan switch.

He is likely to be available for two home games in the coming days with second-placed Slough visiting the Premier Plus Stadium on Saturday ahead of an all-Cambridgeshire clash against Royston on Tuesday.

Meechan might not be the only attacking arrival ahead of the weekend. Clements confirmed he is also tracking another potential target.

Saints have only picked up one win so far this season and have been out of action since going down to a 2-0 defeat in an A1 derby at Biggleswade Town last Tuesday.
