St Neots Town manager Matt Clements saluted his players and the club’s supporters following a high-scoring away success.

Saints triumphed 4-2 at Farnborough in the Southern League Premier Division to avenge a home defeat at the hands of the same side on the opening day of the campaign.

Clements’ men have come a long way since then – something proven by an accomplished performance in Hampshire where the margin of victory could have been greater.

Captain Luke Knight made an early breakthrough with his first goal of the season before they were pegged back on the half-hour by a penalty from veteran striker Jamie Cureton.

Saints were left feeling frustrated as the hosts’ successful spot-kick arrived second after they saw strong penalty appeals of their own – following a pull back on Tom Meechan - ignored by the referee.

But parity proved to be short-lived as Saints soon hit the front again when Tom Wood fired in at the far post after being picked out by a Jack Bradshaw free-kick.

They advantage was extended just after the hour when Meechan converted a Dylan Williams cross, but Farnborough applied the pressure and responded with a second goal with 13 minutes to go.

Saints were reliant on a smart save from goalkeeper Mike Emery to keep them ahead before they sealed victory in stoppage time as Williams tucked away a penalty after Meechan was impeded.

Boss Clements said: “It was a very pleasing result. We did as well as we have done all season in the first half.

“We did make life a bit more uncomfortable for ourselves than it needed to be in the second half, but it was a terrific performance overall.

“The players were excellent on the pitch and the fans gave us great support. It was a good day for everyone.”

The victory lifted St Neots back into the top half of the Premier Division standings ahead of a home date against Hitchin tomorrow night (Tuesday).
