Godmanchester Rovers produced a double stoppage-time salvo to snatch a victory they looked to have thrown away only moments earlier.
Arran Mackay and Matty Allan struck in a breathtaking conclusion to a terrific Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division as Ollie Drake’s men triumphed 5-3 at Haverhill Borough last Saturday.
Rovers were dominant in the first half and deserved a bigger lead than was provided by strikes from Ben Yeomans and Allan.
The two teams traded goals early in the second half with the Godmanchester lead briefly being cut before Simon Unwin found the net.
Drake’s men contrived to concede again almost immediately and only a pair of terrific Phil Peachey saves kept them in front.
Rovers eventually saw their lead wiped out in the 89th minute, but they weren’t about to settle for a point.
Defender Mackay turned himself into a makeshift striker to put them ahead before Peachey was called upon to make another outstanding stop.
Allan then raced through to complete a quick counter-attack to seal Rovers’ most dramatic success of the campaign.
“I’ve never known a game like it,” admitted boss Drake. “One minute we were in complete shock when it looked like we had thrown the win away - then we showed incredible levels of character to respond so well.
“I have to give huge praise to the boys for not lying down when it looked as though they had thrown the game away.
“Arran took it up on himself to go up front and got us a vital goal before Matty finished it off.
“We were absolutely fantastic in the first half when playing at a high tempo with a lot of quality. We didn’t perform anywhere near well enough in the second half, but we got away with it.
“We need to learn to perform for 90 minutes and if we manage that we will win a lot more games a lot more convincingly.
“We know where the problems are at the moment and we are doing all we can to address them.”
Drake is referring to the club’s defensive record after leaking seven goals in two games - they were beaten 4-3 by Deeping Rangers in the FA Vase the previous weekend.
He hopes the possible return of former favourite Charlie Bowen can solve those issues.
Rovers have made an approach for a player who helped them to back-to-back runners-up finishes in the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons.
Bowen is currently at Premier Division rivals Newmarket Town but could be back in Godmanchester colours as soon as tomorrow night (Wednesday) when they face Histon at the David Wilson Homes Ground.
It is the first of two clashes in a week between the Cambridgeshire rivals. They meet again on Tuesday at Histon in the third round of the League Challenge Cup.
Those fixtures sandwich a league trip to rock-bottom Wivenhoe Town for Rovers this Saturday.
