Godmanchester Rovers chief Chris Hyem has laid down the gauntlet to his players for the remainder of this season.

Hyem wants the club’s current squad to do enough in their eight remaining Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division games to convince him they want to be a part of the future.

He successfully guided the club out of relegation bother following his October appointment, but progress has stalled since the turn of the year.

Rovers go to Great Yarmouth this Saturday with Hyem keen to put points on the board.

“We still have a job to do this season and that’s to finish as high in the table as we possibly can,” said Hyem.

“It’s been tough going since Christmas and we need to get back to winning games of football. We’ve only done it twice in 2017 and that record isn’t good enough.

“Hopefully we can start putting it right with a decent result this Saturday, but it will be far from easy. It’s a long way to go and Yarmouth are a good side in the top half of the table.

“We’re also planning for next season and it’s up to the lads to show us they still want to be here.

“I’m looking for good performances, good attitudes and good commitment.”

Hyem has seen two Rovers players depart for struggling Cambs League sides.

Ben Keating has dropped two levels to join Kershaw Premier Division strugglers Hemingfords United and Josh Sewell has made a similar switch to Foxton.

Rovers have been out of action since a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Saffron Walden last Saturday.

Loan recruit George Couzens struck for the first time in Godmanchester colours since arriving from higher-level Biggleswade Town, but Hyem admitted his side were punished for conceding ‘two sloppy goals’.

Rovers are understood to be keen on bringing in French talent Nassim L’Ghoul on loan.

The winger is currently at St Neots and is well-known to Rovers’ assistant boss Andy Davies from his time managing Town earlier in the season.
